Lexington, Chapin have strong finishes at SC cross country championships

Two Midlands teams and one runner earned runner-up finishes at the South Carolina High School League cross-country championships Saturday.

Blythewood’s Jacob Powell finished second and the Lexington boys were team runners-up in the Class 5A Division I championship.

The Chapin boys were runner-up in 5A Division II championships. All the races were held at the Aiken Steeplechase course.

Powell was one of seven area runners to finish in the top 15, which guarantees all-state honors. Lexington’s Josh Voegele was third, and Easton Henderson was 11th in helping the Wildcats to their second-place finish.

Spring Valley’s Brendan Hitchcock was sixth and Evan Robinson ninth as the Vikings finished third. Dutch Fork’s Evan Demasi was seventh and River Bluff’s Daniel Campbell was 10th.

In the girls 5A Division I race, Blythewood’s Anna Kelly was third and River Bluff’s Savannah Davis seventh.

Lexington finished fourth in the team standings and River Bluff was eighth.

The Clover girls and JL Mann boys won the 5A Division I cross country state championships. Clover’s Ella Nighbur was the girls champion, and Boiling Springs’ Luke Hurley won the boys race.

In Class 5A Division II boys, Chapin’s Michael Rose came in sixth and Brandon Rogers was 11th in helping the Eagles to the second-place finish.

On the girls’ side, Chapin came in third, while Lugoff-Elgin’s Estella Blackwell was 13th.

Fort Mill’s boys and girls swept the 5A Division II team championships. West Florence’s Susana Martinez was the girls champ and Hillcrest’s Kadin Nance the boys.

Greer Middle College won the 3A boys and girls team championships. GMC’s Jackson Tuck won the boys race, while Eva Cifuni of St. Joseph’s won the girls race.

Saturday was the second day of the championship, with Class A, 2A and 4A having been on Friday.

In Class 4A, the AC Flora boys finished eighth and Dreher was 10th. ACF’s Daniel Brown was the top local finisher with an eighth-place showing.

In 4A girls, Dreher was seventh, AC Flora ninth and Gray Collegiate 12th. Jenna Livingston of Dreher finished eighth. Paisley Hinkle and Kaylee Anderson of Gray Collegiate were 14th and 15th to earn all-state honors.

In 2A, Philip Simmons won the boys and girls championships. Liberty’s Reid Finley won the boys championship and Philip Simmons’ Avah Mallek won the girls championship.

Pelion boys finished fourth and the Pelion girls came in fifth. Pelion’s Kolton Gleason came in eighth in the boys race.

In Class A, Green Sea Floyds boys and Dixie’s girls won the team championships. Riverwalk Academy’s Hunter Willis is the boys champion and Dixie’s Rachel Prescott the girls champion.
