15 Berkeley County wrestlers appear in first rankings

Fifteen Berkeley County School District wrestlers appeared in the first individual rankings of the regular season by www.scmat.com Saturday, Dec. 20.

The next rankings by the wrestling website are set for mid-January.

Stratford’s boys and Timberland’s boys lead the way for Berkeley County with four ranked wrestlers apiece. Berkeley has three grapplers in the list of ranked Class 5A grapplers.

Goose Creek’s Montero Royal, a two-time state champion, is the top wrestler at 126 pounds in Class 5A and the lone ranked Gators wrestler. The junior just recorded his 100th career victory Dec. 19 in the Hanahan Hawk Invitational at HHS.

Ranked for the Knights in Class 5A are: Travis Grey (126 pounds, No. 6), Drayton Howard (157, No. 7), Tanner Merta (165, No. 2) and Cameron Gibbs (175, No. 8).

Timberland’s ranked wrestlers in Class 2A-A are: Wyatt Thames (120, No. 3), Ashby Driggers (138, No. 6), Sean Brown (150, No. 7) and Owen Berrios (157, No. 3).

In the rankings for Berkeley are: Jordyn White (126, No. 2), Aiden President (190, No. 8) and Landon Jackson (215, No. 2).

In girls wrestling, Goose Creek’s Lael-Morton Wheeler (115, No. 3) and Payton Souder (190, No. 6), and Philip Simmons’ Alison Souvoravong (145, No. 8) show up in the rankings.

At No. 5 in the Class 5A Div. I poll, Stratford is the highest ranked team from Berkeley County. The Knights’ lone loss in duals competition came to top-ranked Carolina Forest.

** Berkeley High School’s Jordyn White won the 126-pound weight class in the Demon Holiday Classic at Lugoff-Elgin Saturday, Dec. 20.

** Hanahan High School’s Jackson Stuckey (150) and Goose Creek High School’s Montero Royal (126) finished first in their weight class in the Hawk Invitational at HHS Saturday, Dec. 20.

Stuckey, Royal and Goose Creek’s Henry Schultz (150) reached milestones in the tournament, recording their 100th career wins. Earlier this month, Stratford’s Tanner Merta (157/165) earned his 100th career win.
