Warren Nelson, Jr. Obituary
Warren Nelson Jr. was a loving husband, father and devoted grandfather. Born on April 12, 1936, in Camden, SC, he was the son of the late Warren and Janie Salmond Nelson. Warren embodied the spirit of his birthplace: strong, resilient, and always willing to lend a helping hand. His love story with his wife, Shirley Nelson, began on June 30, 1986, a union filled with laughter, companionship, and mutual respect.
Warren’s career as a Brick Mason was more than just a job—it was a craft he perfected over several years. His hands built more than just walls; they built a legacy within the construction industry. His dedication to his craft was rivaled only by his commitment to serving his country. Warren was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the United States Army National Guard. His service was a testament to his courage, resilience, and indomitable spirit. “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself,” said Joseph Campbell, a quote fitting for Warren’s life.
Away from the brick and mortar, Warren found solace in the simple pleasures of life—fishing and spending precious moments with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley Bush Nelson; daughters, Lytarsha Jiles (Travis) of Elgin and Millcent Nelson of Camden; brother, Charles Nelson (Sherry) of Savannah, Ga.; sister, Frances Hooks (Joseph) of Atlanta, Ga.; 3 grandchildren, Courtney Nelson, Meccah Nelson and Zarria Jiles; and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by grandson, Travis Zidel Jiles who he loved and adored and is now with again; a great-grandson; and siblings, Margie Avent, Moses Nelson, and Evans (E.V.) Nelson.
Warren’s life will be celebrated on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Sanders Creek Baptist Church in Camden. He will be laid to rest with full military honors on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:00 am in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, South Carolina. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 10,2025 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home.
