MR. JOHN B. PHELPS DEAD.

A Brave Confederate Soldier and Lately Probate Judge of Kershaw County.

Special to The State.

Camden, Feb. 26. – Mr. John B Phelps, judge of Probate of Kershaw county, died suddenly in Charleston yesterday, and his body was brought to Camden for interment today.

He was attending a reunion of the command of which he was a proud member in Charleston, when he was stricken. For several years Mr. Phelps was possessed of an incurable disease and though this was not directly responsible for his death, it had so under-minded his constitution as to make him an easy victim for the malady which was his undoing.

No man was prouder of the fact of having served in the Confederate army than was John B. Phelps, and though he was never an officer, his service behind the gun was of the kind that tells, and his comrades delight to honor him as a brave man. He has given many years of his life to his native county, having served in several capacities since the war. He was a good citizen and a faithful officer and though, miserably compensated for his labors, was always at his post, even in the days of his physical distress. Four sons and two daughters survive him.
