Balls of Fire In Blaney Now Are Explained

CAMDEN, Sept. 8 (Special) – Unexplained “balls of fire in the sky” had jittery Blaney citizens summoning help from Camden Thursday night but City Manager Max Holland had an explanation this morning.

Mr. Holland and Fire Chief Carl Hammond went to Blaney after being there by a resident, talked to the persons who saw the “flying saucers” – as they were termed- and the Highway Patrol.

This morning, he said: I am convinced now that they were probably flares at the Fort Jackson firing range.” The range is located to the south of Blaney, where the “balls of fire” were sighted.

Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Garrison reported sighting the “balls of fire” first and contacted the Camden city manager. They said they were sighted at 8 o’clock and again at 9:25.

Mrs. Garrison and her husband, who described them as going “on and off,” observed them for about an hour the first time and for about as long a period the second time.
