Hubert Platt of Atlanta finished first in the super stock class with his 1962 Chevrolet at 112 m. p. h. and an elapsed time of 12.95 seconds at the Blaney Drag Strip. They run again at the track August 18 . . . Cecil Johnson and Mutt Powell are co-favorites in a field of 14 at Andrews tonight . . . Don Burnett of San Francisco has entered the fastest Chevy Corvett on the West Coast against Bill Pickelsimer of Greenville and a large field for Saturday’s Greer drag races. Burnett is going after the national drag title at Indianapolis on Labor Day.

Some 25-30 cars are expected for the DARC racing program at Greenwood Thursday night . . . A new, permanent trophy for winners of the Southern 500 was unveiled in Charlotte Tuesday night. THe trophy is a massive gold and mahogany symbol of the best in racing . . . . The finishes in the 40-lap main event at Rock Hill Saturday night will determine the six top positions for the second annual 930 Derby August 18.
