Rufus Coleman

Rufus Coleman was born August 29, 1909 in Richland County, a son of Willie C. Coleman and Eula Jacobs Coleman.

1940

According to the United States Census recorded on April 29, 1940, Rufus Coleman (31) rented a home in Messers, Richland County, South Carolina with his wife, Beulah Coleman (22) and their son, Carl Coleman (3). It was reported that all family members were born in South Carolina and lived in the same house on April 1, 1935. Rufus was a laborer on the road project and Beulah was a seamstress for the W. P. A. sewing room.

1963

On July 8, 1963, Rufus Coleman was mentioned as a honorary pallbearer in the obituary of Mrs. Eula Jacobs Coleman.

Coleman Services Will Be Saturday

Funeral services for Rufus Coleman will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Alpine Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. C. A. Fleming. Interment in the churchyard.

Active pallbearers will be C. D. Brown, A. L. Jacobs, Jack Lovett, Vernon Brazell, Joe Jones and Otto Jacobs.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Martin, Dewey Martin, D. M. Brazell, Brown Ross, E. L. Cook, Howell Ross, Hampton Watts, Lexie Moak, Earl Jacobs, Lee Peak, Wesley Starling, Dalton Medlin, Melton Medlin, Tom Brazell, Roy Hornsby and Wesley Blizzard.

Mr. Coleman, 54, of Rt. 2, Elgin, died Wednesday of a heart attack while he was working in Columbia.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Beulah Coleman; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Watts of Elgin; three sons, Paul, Colie, and Randal Coleman of Elgin; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Brazell, Mrs. G. E. Rose and Mrs. Laura Gunter, and three brothers, Willie, Raiford and Ensley Coleman.

ELGIN – Funeral services for Rufus Coleman will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 1963 from Alpine Baptist Church, with interment in the churchyard.

Mr. Coleman, 54, of Rt. 2, Elgin, died Wednesday, November 13, 1963, of a heart attack while working in Columbia.

He was born in Richland County, son of Willie Coleman and Eula Coleman. He was a carpenter and a member of Spears Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Beulah Coleman; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Watts of Blaney; three sons, Paul Coleman, Colie Coleman, and Randal Coleman of Blaney; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Brazell (Louvenia Coleman Brazell), Mrs. C. E. Rose (Plumie Coleman Rose) and Mrs. Laura Gunter, and three brothers, Willie Coleman, Raiford Coleman and Ensley Coleman.
