ELGIN – Funeral services for David Edward Nelson, 78, will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Jackson and Dr. Tommy Huddleston will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 21, 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church Keyboard Fund, P.O. Box 85, Elgin, SC 29045.
Mr. Nelson died Saturday, November 19, 2005. Born April 6, 1927, in Elgin, South Carolina (formerly known as Blaney), he was the son of the late John Nelson and Della Jackson Nelson. Mr. Nelson had retired from the DuPont Company in 1984 after 34 years of service. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Elgin where he had served through the years as Chairman of Deacons, Minister of Education, Minister of Music, Senior Adult Minister, and Sunday School Teacher. He served a term as Moderator for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, was a member of the Woodmen of the World and a U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Nelson was an avid Clemson fan, loved to camp and travel and loved music. He also loved to farm. Nothing made him happier than to plant and tend huge vegetable gardens and then give most of the produce away to family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Vinson Nelson; daughter, Deborah N. Morris and husband, Jack D. Morris, III, of Elgin; son, David Michael Nelson and wife, Lynn, of Elgin; grandson, Seth Nelson and Zachary Nelson; sisters, Jessie Stockman of Elgin, and Juanita Ross of Lugoff; and brother, Jimmy Nelson of Elgin. He was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.
