COLUMBIA — Carl Ray Bowen entered into Eternal Rest with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2007.

A celebration of his home going and reflection of his life will be held at 2 o’clock, Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Jackson Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Rev. Walter Mack Burriss officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Geiger, Lloyd Geiger, Tim Geiger, Vic Geiger, Billy Hutto, Billy Maples, Randy Burgess and long time friend, Attorney Coleman Catoe. Honorary pallbearers will be Don and Ron Bowen, Wayne Wilson, Chad Burris, Wilbur Windham, Edith Hornsby Ariail, Gabby and Bubba Windham, Clete Powell, Kevin Hunsaker, his classmates of Dentsville High School, Class of 1950, Bobby Bartlett, Odell Martin, Charlie Windham, Henrietta Corley Kaiser, Martha Dixon Morris and Connie Dowey Sink. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Friday evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Jackson Creek Baptist Church, 7778 Two Notch Rd., Columbia, SC 29223 or a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Bowen was born August 18, 1932 at the home of his grandparents in Blaney, SC to the late Lawrence B. Bowen and Lila Geiger Bowen. He graduated from Dentsville High School and served in the S.C. National Guard. He began his career in sales as a young boy during WW II selling peanuts to soldiers from Ft. Jackson. During his early years in the automobile business he was employed as a salesman with several dealers in Columbia. Later he was known as “The Walking Man’s Friend” as owner and operator of Carl Bowen Auto Sales and Not A Lemon Auto Sales and Rentals. Carl was a fixture on Decker Blvd. and lived his entire life there. He dearly loved Southern Gospel Music.

Those who will cherish fond and precious memories are his loving and devoted Filipino bride of almost 19 years, Linda Rosales Bowen, whom he called his “Pearl of the Orient;” daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Glenn Wessinger, Mary Bowen and Randy Burgess; granddaughter, Natalie Wessinger; stepgrandchildren, Erin Wessinger, Wade and Stephanie Weatherford, Adrienne Burgess and Courtney Burgess; brother and sister-in-law, Donald L. and Patsy Bowen; mothers-in-law, Brigida Rosales and Odessa Burroughs Barrow; mother of his daughters, Frances Burroughs Gunter; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dogs Curley and Scooby.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Palmetto Hospice, especially Susan and Harriett, Hospice volunteer, Geri Cutler, friends, Nicole Whitmire Windham, Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Walter Mack Burriss, Wayne “Bubba” Wilson for his faithful weekly visits and Chad Burris for faithfully visiting every Wednesday at noon since 1990.
