Mary Margaret Hamilton Calk, beloved sister, wife, mother and friend died in Camden, South Carolina on January 16 at the age of 97.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she arrived as the 4th child to Dr. William Ferguson Hamilton,Sr. and Helen Dula Hamilton. Her family moved to Augusta, Georgia when she was a child and she grew up enjoying the wonders of a simpler time. Her love of plays, reading, and writing sent her to UGA where she majored in journalism. After college, she enjoyed many great adventures, radio and print experiences in journalism and life long friendships until she met and fell for the love of her life, Bill Calk, a handsome Marine veteran and cub reporter in Aiken, SC. They were married for 40 years and made a happy home in Camden with their three children. Mary Margaret was always a voracious reader and a cracker jack bridge player. She achieved the rank of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League. Mary Margaret enjoyed membership in the Camden Garden Club and served as an officer. She wrung every bit of joy out of life with her sparkling personality, mischievous wit, and sense of style.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband and their first born son, Stephen Hamilton Calk and her very special companion and confidant, Don Struss, known affectionately as Mr. Wonderful.

She is survived by her daughter in law, Martha Calk of Charleston, her daughter, Julie Calk Jackson (Bill) of Baton Rouge and a son, Cortis Alan Calk (Terri) of Camden, seven grandchildren, Adam Jackson, Curt Jackson, Will Calk, Lizzie Ratner, Mary Morrow, Cort Calk, and Hamilton Calk. She was excited to welcome 3 great grandchildren to her brood, Julia, Thomas and Rosie.

The family sends deep gratitude to the wonderful folks at Pinedale who took extra good care of her in her final years.

A private graveside service is planned. Memorials may be made to Thiel Meyer Pet Adoption Center, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020.
