Obituary

James Daniel “J.D.” Newman, age 89, of the Mt. Pisgah community, Bethune, S.C., passed away, Sunday morning, August 13, 2023, at his home, with his daughter by his side. Born in Bethune, S.C., he was a son of the late William Charlie Newman and Nannie McCaskill Newman. He retired after serving his country 20 years country in the United States Navy. He was a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Newman also retired after serving in the Navy from Kershaw County School District. He was a faithful member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and a member of Macedonia Lodge # 239.

He is survived by his daughter, Martha N. Mason and her husband, Joe; two sisters, Elaine N. Hartis and Helen (Glen Reed) Catoe and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lula Mae Jackson Newman and ten siblings, Cecil Gerald “Buster” Newman, Sara Lee Anderson, Heyward Newman, Boyd Newman, Susie Mae McGee, Alma Hilton, Roy Dale Newman, Grady G. Newman, William C. “Bill” Newman, and George Nelson Newman.

The family will receive friends, Tuesday evening, August 15, 2023, from 5:00 until 6:30 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton Street, Kershaw, S.C.

The funeral service for Mr. Newman will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday morning, August 15, 2023, in the sanctuary of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C., with military honors and masonic rites.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 2140 McBee Highway, Jefferson, S.C. 29718, in memory of Mr. Newman.
