Obituary

A memorial service for Reverend Samuel DeWitt Atkerson, 80, will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Washington Street Baptist Church, 401 South Vanderhorst Street, Winnsboro, SC, 29180.  Graveside Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Emmanuel Baptist Church Cemetery, 1643 McRae Road, Camden, SC, 29020.  Revered Mickey Cockrell will officiate.  Memorials may be made to Washington Street Baptist Church Children’s Fund, P.O. Box 462, Winnsboro, SC 29180.

Rev. Samuel Atkerson, Pastor of Washington Street Baptist Church, passed away on November 1, 2023.  He was born in Batesburg, the son of the late Rev. John D. Atkerson and Iva Wise Atkerson.

Samuel is survived by his wife, Helen Raynor Atkerson, of Blythewood; children, Anitra Atkinson (Greg), of Lugoff, Whitney Tyler, of  Myrtle Beach, Jason Welch (Brooke), of Saugatuck, MI; grandchildren, Abby and Sarah Atkinson, Gage Tyler, Wyatt and Weston Welch; sisters, Sandra Jackson, of Camden, Karen Leadingham (Cisco), of Camden, Cheryl Watkins (Gary), of Lexington; sisters-in-law, Frankie Atkerson, of Camden and Tammy Gauntt, of Florence; brother-in-law, Charles Moore, of Lugoff; Deborah Brown, of Lexington, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and dog Luke.

Samuel was predeceased by sisters, Louise Cockrell, Janie Ruth Lovett, Miriam Moore, and Annette Atkerson and brothers, Marion, Johnny, and Rev. Jimmy Atkerson.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
