Joan Anderson Sheheen passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on Friday, March 1, 2024.
Joan was born in Camden, South Carolina on March 18, 1933. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Austin Moses Sheheen, Jr., her parents, Thomas Attis and Antionette Anderson, and her grandson, Christopher Ward Bowers.
Joan graduated from Camden High School in 1951. While there, she was a member of the cheerleading squad and cheered on her future husband, the quarterback of the football team. She attended Winthrop College until her marriage to Austin in 1954. After brief stays in Texas and Columbia, SC, they made their final home in Camden.
She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where she was a member of the Alter Guild, and she was very active in her community. She served as President of the Junior Welfare League. She was the owner of a successful women’s clothing store, Mary Rice, Inc., for many years.
Joan enjoyed traveling with her husband to many parts of the world. She was an avid needle pointer, and her house is full of her creations. Her greatest joy came from being around her family, especially at gatherings which included the extended family.
Joan is survived by her seven daughters, Teresa Sheheen Ross (Freddie), Rhonda Sheheen Hammond (Vernon), Donna Sheheen Watson (Mitch), Rebecca Sheheen, Brenda Sheheen Carmon, Laura Sheheen Bradham and Amanda Sheheen Sanford (Michael), 24 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and her two sisters, Sylvia Anderson Watson and Priscilla Anderson Hall.
A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at 6:00 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 12:00 pm, also at the church. Father John Zimmerman will officiate. The pallbearers will be grandsons Ryan Bowers, Jacob Hammond, Michael Kohn, Channing Carmon, Stephen Carmon, and Austin Braddock. Honorary pallbearers will be Abraham Sanford and Oliver Sanford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1709 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020 or Food for the Soul, P.O. Box 1591, Camden, SC 29021.
