Obituary of Billy Wolbert Smith

LUGOFF- A funeral service for Billy Wolbert Smith, 89, will be held Friday, April 5, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. at Harvest Baptist Church with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Bill Dulany will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legin Post 17.

    Mr. Smith, husband of the late Virginia Louise Smith, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Born in Seattle, WA, he was a son of the late William Henry Smith and Vere Irene Wolbert Smith. Billy served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1953-1958 and in the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1962 as an airplane mechanic at Moody Air Force Base and Shaw Air Force Base. After service, he went on to work for DuPont and retired after 25 years.  Billy was a member of Harvest Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 17. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking.

    Billy is survived by his children, Virginia “Ginny” Belford (John), Joyce O’Cain (Tom), Billy Joe Smith, and Janet Smith; grandchildren, John Belford, Brian Belford, Justin Thornton (Angie), Matthew Thornton (Fujiko), Lindsey Corbin (Matthew), Jacob Smith (Cassie), Jessica Janzen (Jeffrey), Molli Smith, and Zachary O’Cain; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanette Swinney. In addition to his wife, Billy is predeceased by a step-brother, Larry Dean Smith.
