Rev. Jeanne Ray passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024.  Born in Woodland, CA, she was the daughter of the late John Ralph Freeman and Thelma Ruth Smith Freeman.  A beloved widow, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Valton Laylon Ray. Jeanne shared with Valton, 24 years in the US Navy.  Together, they traveled the United States extensively, creating cherished memories.  A devoted mother, Jeanne dedicated herself to raising their five children until she received a calling in her 50’s to become a United Methodist Licensed Local Pastor.  She faithfully served in pastoral capacities in Eastern North Carolina until her retirement at age 80, touching many lives with her compassion and wisdom.

Jeanne leaves behind many, all who will miss her dearly: 4 loving adult children and the surviving wife of her eldest son:  Valton Otis Ray (Sandra) of Chapin, SC; Colleen Elizabeth Hawkins (James) of Cyprus, TX; Darrel Franklin Ray (Debra) of Tomball, TX, and Patricia Jeanne Seymour (David) of Ridgeway, SC and daughter-in-law Diane Ray of Columbia, SC. She also leaves 12 grandchildren: Sarah, Elizabeth, Emily, Marshall, Joseph, Stuart, Caroline, David, Samantha, Stephanie, Kathryn, and Megan; and 24 great-grandchildren: Avigail, Gadol, Asher, Millie, Allison, Mary, Valton, Georgia, Penn, Taylor, Jasper, Julia, Everett, Ellison, Robbie, Kelsey, Kylie, Lucas, Charlotte, Laura, Dean, Elizabeth, Adaline, and Olivia.  She is also survived by her brother, Robert Freeman (Margie) of Sacramento, CA; and sister-in-law, Edith Freeman of Sacramento, CA.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jeanne was predeceased by her son, Timothy Stuart Ray, and brother, John Freeman.

Jeanne’s legacy of love, faith and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.  Hers was a life well lived.  We celebrate her crossing over as she is finally able to meet her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and be reunited with her husband Val and other loved ones who have gone before her.
