Alice Urquhart Clarke Sullivan (Mrs. Roger Joseph Sullivan) died July 1, 2024.  Born in Columbia, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Alice Childs Urquhart Clarke and Rufus Rivers Clarke.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Jesse Jenkins Harrill, III (Barbara Mills Clarke); her son and daughter-in-law, James Edward Swan, IV (Holly Denise Cox) of Chapin, South Carolina; her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McGinn (Jennifer Ann Sullivan) of Auburndale, Massachusetts; four granddaughters, Emily Swan Frech (Matthew Charles Frech) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Caroline Swan Luethy (Samuel David Luethy) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sarah Paige Swan of Chapin and Rachel Ann McGinn of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and daughter Mary Catherine Godshall of Chapin.

Mrs. Sullivan was predeceased by her husband, Roger Joseph Sullivan, and her daughter, Alice Louise Swan Nowell of Columbia.

Mrs. Sullivan graduated from Dreher High School, St. Mary’s Junior College and the University of South Carolina, cum laude, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Vice-President of Delta Delta Delta sorority.  After several moves, she returned to Columbia and pursued a long career in banking and accounting.  She retired from Agfirst Farm Credit Bank in 1999.

She and her late husband Roger enjoyed being members of the Faculty Club and The Palmetto Club.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Sullivan spent much of her adult life as an active member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, where she volunteered in many capacities, most enjoyably in the Trinity Bookstore.  She also volunteered for many years as a docent at Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens.  She was a member of the Columbia Junior League and later a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

After moving to Wildewood Downs in 2017, she found treasured friendships among the residents and staff.  She was well-known for riding her green adult tricycle, always carrying treats for the dogs she’d pass along the way.

Alice enjoyed gardening, reading, needlepoint, cross stitch and crochet.  Over the years, she made countless knit caps for cancer patients, and for anyone else who asked.

In addition to her friends, family and grandchildren, two other delights in her life were birdwatching (especially hummingbirds) and her beloved cats.  Her last cat, Polly, passed only a couple of weeks before Alice, and surely raced to meet her at the Rainbow Bridge with the entourage of feline friends who had come before her.
