Helen White Obituary

Helen White passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, with her family by her side. She was 95 years old and still telling jokes!

Helen was born in Ellenboro, NC, to the late Albert B. and Estelle Kinzer Bushong. After high school, she moved to Cullowhee, NC, where she attended Western Carolina University and earned an associate’s degree. During her time in Cullowhee, she met her first husband, Douglas H. Nims Jr., who became the father of her children. In 1950, they moved to Camden, SC, where Helen would make a lasting impact on the community.

Just as her father had been an active figure in Ellenboro, Helen took on a prominent role in Camden. She served as the secretary for the school district and for the ROTC program for many years. She was a devoted member of the Bethesda Presbyterian Choir for over 50 years and played an active role in the church. In addition, she participated in the Junior Welfare League and was a Sunday school teacher. Helen was also an enthusiastic member of the Edgewood Garden Club.

Helen was deeply proud of her Bushong heritage, often sharing stories of her beloved parents and the Colfax County Fair, which her father founded. She held a lifelong love and appreciation for music, playing piano and guitar. She had an infectious sense of humor and was always eager to share the latest joke, and her love of bedspreads and curtains.

Helen’s memory is survived by her daughters, Linda N. Rowland (Keith), of Camden, and Kay Nims, of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Jennifer Wages, Robert Horne, Susanna Horne, Kelly Ferri (Christian), and nine great-grandchildren, who all love her to pieces.

Other than her parents, Helen is predeceased by her first husband and father of her children, Douglas H. Nims; her second husband, Paul White; her sister, Dorothy Giamo, and her brother, Lowell Bushong.

Helen was adored by everyone who had the privilege of meeting her. She was the glue that held our entire family together, always grounding us and reminding us of what truly mattered. Her love and wisdom were unwavering, and she remained the anchor of our family right up until her final days. Her presence was a constant source of strength and comfort, and her impact on all of us will forever be felt.
