Former Presiding Elder of Charleston District Dies at Greenwood
Rev. Dr. A J. Stokes, a superannuated minister of the South Carolina Methodist Conference, died yesterday at Greenwood, as a result of his recent stroke of paralysis, and the conference has lost one of its ablest members.
Dr. Stokes was 70 years of age, a graduate of Wofford College and a prominent worker in his church for more than a half century. After filling pulpits in all sections of the State, he served as presiding elder in several districts, Charleston among the number, and he was universally regarded by all with whom he came in contact. He was a loyal friend and supporter of Wofford College, Epworth Orphanage and the Columbia Female College.
Dr. Stokes is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter. The body will be laid to rest at his home at Camden.

One of the Oldest and Most Prominent Ministers of the South Carolina Conference.

Greenwood, April 13. – Rev. Andrew Jackson Stokes, D. D., of the South Carolina Methodist conference, died here this morning at 9 o’clock an a result of the paralytic stroke which came upon him Tuesday evening while he war attending the session of the investigating committee in the case of Rev. C. W. Creighton, editor of The Christian Appeal.
Dr. Stokes was at once removed to the home of Rev. M. B. Kelley at the Methodist parsonage. Medical aid was given immediately but he never rallied. Mrs. Stokes was summoned from Allendale and was here when the end end came.
The funeral was conducted at the Methodist church here this evening at 6 o’clock, Rev. Waddy T. Duncan, presiding elder of Cokesbury district, and Rev. M. B. Kelley, pastor of the Greenwood Methodist church, conducted the services. The burial will take place at Camden tomorrow, The remains left here tonight. Rev. Waddy T. Duncan will accompany the family. Rev. W. S. Stokes, D. D. , a son arrived yesterday and was here when the end came. The other children are: Mrs. W. C. Kirkland of Allendale, Mr. A. J. Stokes of Asheville, N. C., and Beverly, who had just recently been under treatment in a Philadelphia hospital.
Rev. Andrew Jackson Stokes was born In Colleton county, August 25, 1836, and was therefore in his 60th year. He received his preparatory schooling at Cokesbury. From Cokesbury he went to Wofford college and was graduated from that Institution in 1859. He was afterwards given the degree of A. M. from Wofford. He was licensed to preach in 1838 and was admitted on trial into the South Carolina conference, December, 1859. Нe was superannuated at the last conference, in Spartanburg, December, 1905, Until that time he had been in the regular work as a pastor with the exception of a brief period when he was a professor in the Spartanburg Female college. Dr. Stokes served many important pastorates and was presiding elder for the full term of both the Marion and Sumter districts and also of the Charleston district. He served 25 years as a trustee of the Columbla Female college. He was the chief agent in founding the Epworth orphanage and served as president of its board of managers. He also served as president of the legal conference of the South Carolina conference. The degree of D. D. was conferred upon him by Emery college, Georgia, 1808. He married first a daughter of the late Whitefoord Smith, D, D. By this marriage he had one son, Rev. W. S. Stokes of Spartanburg. His present wife is a daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Wragg Capers. Three children were born of this marriage.
